A submerged aquatic center that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding lake ecology.
The Aqua Leisure Pavilion is partially submerged beneath the surface of a tranquil lake near Oslo. The architectural concept was to create a “liquid threshold” where the transition from land to water is seamless. Visitors descend into the center via a concrete ramp that slowly disappears into the waterline, leading to a main hall where the windows look directly into the underwater ecology of the lake.
The roof is an extension of the local shoreline, covered in native moss, stone, and wildflowers. Inside, the pool reflects the sky through a massive central oculus, while the heat for the facility is generated through a geothermal exchange system that taps into the lake’s thermal mass. It is a space of deep restoration, where architecture serves as a bridge between the body and the elements.
