A folded-plate concrete structure housing a high-tech robotics and engineering center.
The Origami Research Lab is a facility dedicated to the intersection of traditional craft and high-tech robotics. The architectural form is inspired by the mathematics of paper folding, translated into a series of massive, self-supporting folded-plate concrete surfaces. This geometric approach allowed us to span 40 meters without internal supports, creating a “clean room” environment essential for large-scale robotic assembly.
The building’s envelope is a masterpiece of precision engineering, featuring triangular glass panels that follow the creases of the concrete folds. During the evening, the laboratory glows like a translucent lantern, revealing the activity within to the university campus. The design is a testament to the idea that structural efficiency and poetic form are not mutually exclusive.
