The Weaver’s Plaza

Marrakesh, Morocco

Public Space

A public market square featuring a parametric timber canopy inspired by traditional weaving.

The Weaver’s Plaza is a revitalization of a historic marketplace in Marrakesh. The design centers on a sprawling parametric timber canopy that reinterprets the intricate patterns of Moroccan textile weaving. By using computational design, we generated a lattice that optimizes airflow and creates a dappled shadow effect—mimicking the “mashrabiya” found in traditional Islamic architecture.

The structure is composed of sustainable cedar wood, sourced from the Atlas Mountains, and is supported by slender steel columns that interfere minimally with the bustling market activity below. The plaza serves as a social infrastructure, providing a shaded sanctuary where the city’s ancient trade traditions can thrive within a contemporary architectural framework.
